The article reported that it is common practice for Egyptian intelligence officers to brief talk show hosts about the messages they want conveyed and that one such officer, Capt. Ashraf al-Kholi, had urged hosts to persuade viewers to accept Trump's decision.
The TV personalities mentioned in the New York Times report denied involvement in the case, saying they do not know anyone by the name of Ashraf Al-Khouly. But Pence's trip to the Middle East, his first as vice president, will be carefully watched following Trump's decision on Israel's capital, which prompted Palestinian leaders to cancel planned meetings with the vice president.

Vice President Mike Pence will travel to Israel, Egypt and Jordan later this month, his office announced on Monday, rescheduling a trip postponed after President Trump's controversial decision last month to officially recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital. He added, according to the Times, "At the end of the day, later on, Jerusalem won't be much different from Ramallah".
He will meet with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, Jordan's King Abdullah II and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said the White House.

In his December 6 address from the White House, Trump defied worldwide warnings and insisted that after repeated failures to achieve peace, a new approach was long overdue, describing his decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital as merely based on reality. The worldwide community does not recognize Israeli sovereignty over the full city.
