Apple says Meltdown and Spectre flaws affect all Mac and iOS devices
05 January 2018, 12:11 | Brenda Erickson
Apple has already released mitigations in iOS 11.2, macOS 10.13.2, and tvOS 11.2 to help defend against Meltdown.
According to media reports and statements issued by cybersecurity experts, the hardware bugs could allow malicious software installed on the devices to get access to the information without responding to the operating systems that should prevent such software from doing this.
A PAIR of security vulnerabilities affect virtually all Apple products but are not now affecting users, the company said. The company says that is "has developed and is rapidly issuing updates for all types of Intel-based computer systems", but it is not clear when - or whether - older devices will be treated to patches.
Apple's statement also said there are no known exploits now impacting customers. Another update is coming to protect the Safari browser from Spectre.
As of present time, Apple said in the statement on its website "there are no known exploits impacting customers at this time".
Just hours after a computer chip flaw exposed majority of smartphones, computers, cloud storage, tablets and laptops to malicious activities, Apple today admitted that all of its iPhones, iPads and computers have been affected by the processor flaw, which could leave it vulnerable to hackers.
"We continue to develop and test further mitigations for these issues and will release them in upcoming updates of iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS", Apple said.
It was inevitable that devices made by Californian giant Apple would also succumb to the CPU vulnerabilities striking terror across the tech world.
Intel said that "for the average user", the performance impact on products using the processors from the last five years "should not be significant and will be mitigated over time".
But the Meltdown and Spectre flaws are found in all modern computer processing units - or microchips - made by Intel and ARM, and together the firms supply nearly the entire global computer market.
Spectre and Meltdown are serious vulnerabilities that take advantage of the speculative execution mechanism of a CPU. Apple has already released all of those updates, so if you own any of those devices, you can protect them by making sure your operating system is up-to-date.
