January starts with wolf supermoon, ends with supermoon lunar eclipse
30 December 2017, 12:40 | Vera Richards
Red moon rising
A lovely supermoon will light up the sky on New Year's Day and shine as a beacon of hope for all the people who over-celebrated the night before.
A blue moon is the second full moon of a month - in January, there will be a full moon on New Year's Day and on January 31 - while a supermoon is when the full moon appears larger and brighter to the naked eye.
From supermoon to blood moon
Blue Moons aren't unique as they happen around once every 2.7 years because the number of days in a new moon to new moon is a bit less than the usual calendar month. The first full moon will occur in January on the night of January 1 depending upon the location.
Most days the moon is almost 238,855 miles from Earth, but during the supermoon it will be approximately 223,068 miles away, according to NASA.
The first full moon of the year is nicknamed the Wolf Moon for its supposed effect on howling animals but it can also be known as the Old Moon, The Ice Moon, and the Snow Moon. In the United Kingdom, people can look up to see the full moon at 2:24 a.m.
The difference between a supermoon and a regular full moon isn't always easy to tell - though if you could put a supermoon next to a micromoon, a full moon that occurs when our satellite is at the part of its orbit furthest from Earth, you'd see the difference.
Salvation Army volunteer rings in holiday season
The Salvation Army in Springfield says $350,000 is still needed to meet this year's Tree of Lights campaign goal. In Quincy, red kettle donors collect only two weekends per year. "Everyone really came together this year".
The supermoon will happen the evening of January 30. Lunar eclipses don't happen each month in light of the fact that the plane of the lunar orbit is somewhat tilted with respect to the plane of the Earth's orbit.
The eclipse of the moon will happen the evening of January 31 or the morning of February 1. In this case, the Earth, the Sun and the Moon don't generally arrange themselves in a straight line to align the moon in the shadow of the Earth. The Jan. 31 supermoon will also feature a total lunar eclipse which will be visible western North America to eastern Asia. The moon is pretty cool and worth looking at, no matter what: "The supermoons are a great opportunity for people to start looking at the Moon, not just that once but every chance they have!"
