Stunning SpaceX Rocket Launch as Seen From Around Southern California Kate Ogden
There is demonstrable proof that this was a terrestrial launch, and not an alien craft or even a UFO. The Falcon 9 booster lifted off from coastal Vandenberg Air Force Base shortly before 5:30 p.m. Friday. This video shows the launch as it streaked across the sky over Phoenix, Arizona.
Calls came into TV stations as far afield as San Diego, more than 200 miles south of the launch site. Cars pulled over on freeways so drivers could take pictures.
The Los Angeles Fire Department issued an advisory that the "mysterious light in the sky" was from the rocket launch. But not everyone heard the news, which compounded the confusion.
Musk appeared content to indulge that speculation. SpaceX founder Elon Musk, responding to one person on Twitter who said the launch sparked an "alien debate" in his family, wrote jokingly, "It was definitely aliens". The spaceship carried the latest batch of satellites for Iridium Communications. The first stage underwent a landing sequence as it does when a recovery is attempted, but there was no drone landing ship in the Pacific Ocean to catch it when it touched down. This time, the rocket was allowed to plunge into the water.
SpaceX has completed its 18th launch in 2017, marking a record year for the private space company. SpaceX plans to have all 75 satellites launched into orbit by mid-2018. The array will also include the Aireon aircraft tracking and surveillance system.
