Israel thanks Guatemala for pledge to move its embassy to Jerusalem

Following Trump's lead Guatemala to move embassy to Jerusalem

Guatemala was one of seven countries to join the United States and Israel in voting against the resolution.

Israel's Foreign Ministry has praised a decision by the president of Guatemala for the Central American country to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, saying the announcement represented "true friendship" between the two countries.

Hotovely said US President Donald Trump's statement would "trigger a wave" of such moves.

On Dec. 6, Trump announced his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and move the USA embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which is being strongly opposed by the global community.

Netanyahu said on Twitter, "It is just the beginning and it is important".

The eight countries on the USA side of the vote were: Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Togo.

'The state of Palestine considers this as a flagrant act of hostility against the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people and worldwide law, ' it said. In a move never recognized by the worldwide community, it annexed the entire city in 1980, claiming it as the Jewish state's "eternal and undivided" capital.

Guatemala was one of just nine countries to vote against last week's U.N. General Assembly resolution denouncing President Donald Trump's recent recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and plans to move the USA embassy there.

Donald Trump upended decades of United States policy with his December 6 announcement that he was recognising Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Israelis see the whole of the city as their undivided capital while the Palestinians view the east as the capital of their future state.

Mr Trump did not set any timetable for moving the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and neither did Guatemalan President, Jimmy Morales.
