Facebook and Universal Music strike huge agreement

The groundbreaking deal means artists such as Taylor Swift Selena Gomez Kayne West and Mariah Carey can be used as soundtracks to user videos uploaded to the site

Facebook says that in the pipeline there are plans to open up "a vast library of music" across multiple social features, though isn't saying exactly what that will entail.

"We look forward to Facebook becoming a significant contributor to a healthy ecosystem for music that will benefit artists, fans and all those who invest in bringing great music to the world".

"Under this partnership, users will be able to upload videos that contain licensed music and personalize their music experiences on Facebook, Instagram and Oculus, while sharing videos with friends and family", the companies said in a statement.

Universal Music Group and social media giant Facebook have signed a global licensing arrangement that will make the publisher's music catalogs available for video and "social experiences", across Facebook, Instagram and Facebook's virtual reality company Oculus. Based on the partnership announced between the music group and YouTube, it sounds as though this agreement is a method to curb financial losses and the new products are a byproduct.
