Long-time Carolina Panthers executive Tina Becker was named chief operating officer of the National Football League club on Monday, hours after scandal-hit owner Jerry Richardson announced the team is for sale.

New ownership could result in relocation and the Panthers' obligation to stay in Charlotte expires in the summer of 2019.

"These have been some of the most hard days of my 19 years with the Panthers, but I am lifted up by the strong resolve and the commitment our employees have shown to this organization", Becker said in a statement released by the team.

The report also states on at least one occasion, Richardson directed a racial slur at an African-American Panthers scout.
