In a televised interview, Salah also called for resuming relations with Saudi Arabia, if the Saudi-led coalition lifts its blockade of Yemeni ports and air facilities.

The news that Saleh had been killed came just hours after Saudi Arabia made a decision to back Saleh, calling his fight against the Houthis a "popular uprising".

Several Houthi military officials said Mr Saleh was killed as he headed along with top party leaders from Sanaa to his hometown of Sanhan, nearby.

The Houthi-run Masirah TV announced the death of the "leader of the traitors", referring to Saleh, who ruled the country for more than three decades, and up until last week was in a fragile alliance with the rebels.

It's likely the phones will use the Snapdragon 845 and the equivalent 10nm Exynos version in selected markets. It's early days, but the leaks will begin flowing freely soon enough.

A Houthi media official, Abdel-Rahman al-Ahnomi said Houthi fighters killed Mr Saleh as he tried to flee to Saudi Arabia though the province of Marib, to the east of the capital.

Unverified footage circulated by Yemeni social media users on Monday appeared to a show corpse resembling Saleh.

The apparent shift in position came as Saleh's forces battled Houthi fighters in Hadda, a district in southern Sanaa where members of Saleh's family, including his nephew Tareq, live.

He was forced to resign after months of protests against him during an Arab Spring uprising in 2011. He remained in the country, however, and continued to wield political power from behind the scenes.

The official added that the Yemeni Interior Ministry will issue a statement in a few minutes to confirm the death of Ali Abdullah Saleh and a number of others during the UAE airstrikes.

"He was martyred in the defence of the republic", said Faiqa al-Sayyid, a leader in the General People's Congress, blaming Huthi rebels for Saleh's killing south of the capital Sanaa.

The Saleh-Houthi split sparked fears of a new front in the Yemen war, which has already claimed more than 8,750 lives since the Saudi-led coalition intervened. This week's fighting reportedly left aid workers trapped inside a building and unable to administer support to civilians.
