Microsoft announces major expansion at Redmond campus

Microsoft plans upgrade for Redmond headquarters

"The 125 buildings that make Microsoft's campus will become 131 when the project is complete, with the inclusion of "$150 million (£112 million) in transportation infrastructure improvements, public spaces, sports fields and green space", Microsoft's blog post reads.

Work is expected to take between five and seven years to complete, coinciding with the planned 2023 arrival of a light rail station for the campus.

Microsoft today unveiled its plans for a major campus overhaul at its home, Redmond.

Harvey Weinstein resigns from Directors Guild of America
Weinstein has further confirmed that there were never any acts of retaliation against any women for refusing his advances". Bob Weinstein is yet to respond to the suit, but has denied any knowledge in his brother Harvey's alleged misconduct.

The overhauled campus will feature underground smart parking facility, as well as inclusive and accessible technology. With the added square footage, the campus' space will be the equivalent of 180 football fields.

Several of the new Microsoft buildings will be four stories tall and centered on a new 2-acre plaza where events can be held - giving the campus a bit of an urban vibe, Smith said. But as its ongoing search for a second headquarters highlights in no uncertain terms, the space-constrained Puget Sound region has few large undeveloped areas appropriate for an expansion that would accommodate up to 50,000 workers-the number Amazon said it may someday employ at its HQ2.

And while we transform our workspace inside, we will renovate the exterior to create more opportunities to exercise, play and connect with nature for the people who work at Microsoft and those who live nearby. Having been the bane of many Microsoft employee for their confusing corridors, it's unlikely they'll be missed.

After decades in which high-tech workplaces were defined by bland, low-slung office buildings, the largest tech companies have seized on the idea that their campus designs can be assets in terms of attracting talent in a highly competitive marketplace, as well as making a strong visual statement about the company's brand, culture and values.

Microsoft also says that it wants its new campus to be more open rather than formal, and it will divide it into a set of "team neighborhoods".

The renovation will see the iconic X-shaped buildings of Bill Gates' Microsoft era go.
