Per a weird White House tradition, which was made an official event in 1989 under George H.W. Bush, the president, joined by the first lady, will grant these two turkeys clemency in the Rose Garden, before taking off for Florida to celebrate the holiday. Last year's turkeys, Tater and Tot, also live there. "He refused. He was a tough cookie", Trump said. "So, Tater and Tot, you can rest easy".
This year's birds were raised in western Minnesota under National Turkey Federation Chairman Carl Wittenburg, according to the White House.
"As many of you know, I have been very active in overturning a number of executive actions by my predecessor", Mr Trump quipped.
Presidents like George H.W. Bush and Barack Obama have all participated in the annual tradition.
The White House announced the news on its Snapchat and Instagram accounts.
Sanders was referring to a poll the White House posted on Twitter, asking people to vote on which turkey Trump would pardon in the ceremony.
"They have a big appearance coming up", Sanders said.
