A software update previous year put the Tesla Model S P100D second only to the Porsche 918 Spyder in terms of acceleration, reaching 60 miles per hour in 2.28 seconds compared with the 2.2 seconds of the Porsche. The trucks will be outfitted with Tesla's Autopilot system, which keeps vehicles within painted road lines and adjusts speeds depending on the cars ahead.

The Roadster has a range of nearly 1,000 kilometers (621.3 miles) on a single charge with a maximum speed of 402 kilometers per hour (249.7 miles per hour).

"Diesel fuel is readily available and relatively efficient for heavy long-haul trucks that cruise open highways at a fixed speed". Hirsch said that the decision to have the driver sit in the center of the truck will improve the aerodynamics of the vehicle and that other truck manufacturers may follow suit. Electric truck sales totaled 4,100 in 2016, but are expected to grow to more than 70,000 in 2026, says Navigant Research.
