Experts Warn, 'Even Ordinary Alcoholic Beverages May Increase Risk of Certain Cancers'

Experts Warn, 'Even Ordinary Alcoholic Beverages May Increase Risk of Certain Cancers'

Consuming alcoholic beverages, even in moderation, may increase your risk of developing certain cancers, according to a new statement released by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

People who engage in moderate to heavy drinking are at greater risk, and some studies have shown some potential benefits of an occasional drink.

The studies also found heavy drinkers have higher risks of mouth, throat, voice box and liver cancer.

The group representing doctors has also called for new initiatives in public health to curb the use of alcohol from restrictions on ads that target minors to taxes.

"We're not saying no one should ever drink at all - we're just saying if you do drink, even trying to keep it down to less than one drink a day would be a smart choice", Alice Bender, a registered dietitian who is the head of nutrition programs for the AICR, told Business Insider in May.

Drinking is linked to 3.5 percent of all cancer deaths in the USA, which is about 21,000 Americans every year.

"If you look at these figures, you see alcohol is a contributing factor; certainly it has a causal role", Dr. Hudis said. "However, the link between increased alcohol consumption and cancer has been firmly established and gives the medical community guidance on how to help their patients reduce their risk of cancer".

The risk for heavy drinkers - defined as eight or more drinks a week for women and 15 or more a week for men, including binge drinkers - are multiples higher.

"People don't typically associate drinking beer, wine, and hard liquor with increasing their risk of developing cancer in their lifetimes", said ASCO President Bruce Johnson, MD, FASCO, in the statement.

"Limiting alcohol intake is a means to prevent cancer", Dr. Noelle LoConte, one of the publication's authors and a professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin said in a statement.

Doctors said the way to lessen the risk is to drink less or don't start if you do not drink already.

Alcohol is thought to increase the risk of head, neck, throat and voice box cancers because those tissues come into direct contact with alcohol when people drink, the oncology society said. They think they're helping to fight breast cancer, but nothing could be farther from the truth, she said.
