Sam Clovis Yanks Nom As Top USDA Scientist After Revealed To Be “Campaign Supervisor” In Rob Mueller Indictments
"The political climate inside Washington has made it impossible for me to receive balanced and fair consideration for this position", Clovis said in a resignation letter to Trump, according to a Politico report.
Page reportedly told House committee members that had mentioned the trip to Sessions, who denied having any knowledge of Trump campaign Russian Federation ties in his Senate confirmation hearing in January.
Papadapoulos pleaded guilty earlier this month to lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents about his dealings with Russians.
Senate Democrats have called on Jeff Sessions to clarify just how much he knew about attempts by the Russian government to influence the 2016 presidential election, following revelations that the attorney general was previously in a meeting with former Trump campaign aide-turned special counsel cooperator George Papadopoulos.
Sessions has been quiet on his involvement at the session, despite being asked about it multiple times during several appearances on Capitol Hill.
"He now needs to come back before the Committee, in person, under oath, to explain why he can not seem to provide truthful, complete answers to these important and relevant questions", Leahy said in a statement.
Sessions and Trump have both previously said that they had no knowledge of any communications between campaign members and Russian Federation - statements that appear to be contradicted by the revelations of Papadopoulos' and Page's meetings.
In addition to Leahy and Blumenthal, Senators Al Franken (Minn.) and Chuck Schumer (NY) are calling for the attorney general to testify.
However, CNN reported on Thursday that John Cornyn, the second-ranking Senate Republican, who serves on the intelligence and judiciary committees, said that he had been unaware that Sessions was at the meeting. The document says when Papadopoulos introduced himself to the group he mentioned having connections that could help the campaign arrange a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Sessions should come back before [the Senate Judiciary Committee]", Schumer said on The Rachel Maddow Show.
A source at the Department of Justice confirmed to HuffPost that Sessions spoke out against the idea.
Sessions has been dogged over his testimony before Congress about interactions with Russians during the 2016 presidential campaign. Instead, he is suggesting that the attorney general be allowed to submit updated written testimony, they said.
But Chris Wallace warns that any Democrats thinking about wanting to push Sessions out of office might want to reconsider.
"I'm not aware of any of those activities", said Sessions in an indirect response to Franken's question. "He should be honest and disclose all truths, especially when he is under oath or testifying before the United States Congress".
