The Penn State Nittany Lions throttled the Michigan Wolverines, 42-13, during a whiteout from Happy Valley on Saturday night. Saquon Barkley rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter, including a 69-yarder on a direct snap on the second play from scrimmage. After a quick MI punt, Trace McSorley ran for 23 yards, then lofted a 35-yard pass to Mike Gesicki. A little more than a year removed from an embarrassing 49-10 loss in Ann Arbor, Penn State handed MI the worst loss of the Jim Harbaugh era.* Penn State and Saquon Barkley jumped all over MI in the first five minutes to build a lightning-quick 14-0 lead, and shut out the Wolverines in the second half while blowing the doors wide open in a 42-13 rout against a team that had entered the week with the top-ranked defense in the nation.
Penn State head coach James Franklin enjoys doing this thing where, after his team scores a touchdown, he pretends to physically beat up someone on his sideline.
Revenge may also be on the minds of numerous Nittany Lions.
There's a lot more work to be done: The next two weeks, Penn State travels to No. 6 Ohio State and No. 18 Michigan State, meaning that Saturday was merely the beginning of a season-defining gauntlet. That's when Penn State took control for good with a seven-play, 75-yard drive just before halftime, in which McSorley completed big passes to DaeSean Hamilton and Mike Gesicki.
McSorley had a crafty 13-yard run to get Penn State on the board in the third quarter, and the game turned into a blowout when Barkley - who had dropped a wide-open pass earlier - bobbled a deep ball but hauled it in for a 42-yard touchdown, further boosting his Heisman stock in Penn State's biggest game of the season so far. That's why Penn State looks like a team fully capable of defending the Big Ten championship.
But the Lions put up a touchdown just 52 seconds later. McSorley faked to Barkley and went in on the next play, scoring with 53 seconds remaining.
