"Workers of firm involved with the discredited and Fake Dossier take the 5th", Trump wrote on Twitter.

The Washington Post has previously reported that the FBI agreed in October 2016 to pay the dossier's author, Christopher Steele, for further work that might help its own investigation into Russian election activities. Trump's tweeted speculation came a day after two officials with the intelligence firm that commissioned the dossier past year appeared before the House Intelligence Committee but invoked their constitutional privilege not to provide testimony.

A special counsel looking into whether Russian Federation tried to sway the 2016 USA election, led by former FBI director Robert Mueller, has since taken over the investigation. He said they would cooperate with "serious" investigations and also claimed that a "Trump cabal has carried out a campaign to demonize our client for having been tied to the Trump dossier".

Khemenei warns: Iran will cut the nuclear deal into shreds

The FBI has also entered the equation by investigating the contents of the dossier, which was published online in January by BuzzFeed News. Fusion GPS says they have promised confidentiality to their clients and to violate that obligation would harm their business model.

Allegedly, the Federal Bureau of Investigation never paid Steele.

When Steele started compiling the dossier in 2016, he was doing so for a Washington firm called Fusion GPS.

Two officials from the firm behind the dossier, Fusion GPS, appeared before the House Intelligence Committee on Wednesday, but answered no questions, and instead invoking their fifth amendment rights against self-incrimination, Bloomberg reports.

Of note, 70,000 or so votes across three key states handed gave Donald Trump an Electoral College victory and thus, the presidency.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the investigation into the dossier had been taken up by the man leading the FBI's Russian Federation probe, Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
