Khemenei warns: Iran will cut the nuclear deal into shreds

22 October 2017, 12:41 | Tara Lloyd

Why Trump's stance on Iran could backfire

U.S. President Donald Trump is on the front page following news that he has decertified a nuclear deal between the two countries and others

Europe's interest in a nuclear understanding with Iran has been consistent, and more longstanding than the US's.

And so Iran sprinted ahead, accumulating thousands more centrifuges to enrich uranium.

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini is scheduled to visit Washington early in November to defend the Iran nuclear deal with members of the Congress.

He called on Europe to actively oppose Mr Trump's position.

Chicago area's soft-drink tax repealed by county board
The Cook County Board of Commissioners voted, 15-2, to repeal a penny-per-ounce tax that went into effect on August 2. After Wednesday's vote, Preckwinkle indicated she wouldn't be taking the lead in adjusting the county's finances.

"We fully stay committed to the complete implementation by all sides of the Iranian nuclear deal". They had lobbied the administration hard and lost.

Led by Congressmen Ted Deutch of Florida and David Price of North Carolina, they argue that withholding certification "would harm our alliances, embolden Iran and threaten US national security".

Trump threatened to withdraw from the deal if Congress doesn't act.

"The worldwide community, and the European Union with it, has clearly indicated that the deal is, and will, continue to be in place".

John Kelly Charms Press At Briefing Urging Them To "Develop Better Sources"
Kelly, the former secretary of Homeland Security, called his current job the "hardest" and "most important" he's "ever had". Kelly was pushed further by the press on the issue of him leaving, to which Kelly turned things back onto the media.

The room for Iran's maneuvers is narrowing while United States terms and conditions are expanding, while Europe's prospects for bringing about a settlement appear hard, given the shift towards a direct confrontation in the conflict between Washington and Tehran for the first time since the establishment of the theocratic system.

President Trump refused to recertify Iran's compliance with the JCPOA on October 13, saying, "since the signing of the nuclear agreement, the regime's risky aggression has only escalated". Without these changes, he says, he will terminate the deal.

But the bloc, reluctant to isolate itself completely from Washington, is also stepping up criticism of Iran's ballistic missile program and its role in what the West sees as fomenting instability in the Middle East. Enlisting Russian and Chinese backing for a new diplomatic track with Iran - Moscow and Beijing are also signatories to the nuclear deal - would encourage Iranian participation in new talks.

"It has to be shown that agreements will be kept to in the long term", Hollande said.
