It started as a reaction to McGowan's temporary suspension from Twitter earlier this week and quickly escalated to the number one global trend on the social media platform on Friday as #WomenBoycottTwitter. A Twitter representative told People magazine McGowan's account was suspended because one of her posts included a private phone number.
On Thursday, a spokeswoman for the disgraced movie mogul said, "Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein".
Canadian television writer Emily Andras, known for the series Wyonna Earp, tweeted the boycott is about respect for women - but some critics say silence is not the way to fight abuse.
When McGowan re-emerged on Twitter Thursday, she wrote, "HW raped me".
The #WomenBoycottTwitter campaign began at midnight Thursday in NY from software engineer Kelly Ellis, who criticized the social media platform for failing to support "victims of hate and harassment".
Minutes after model Chrissy Teigen tweeted her support for the boycott she shared examples of the abuse she had received online in response, some of it sexually explicit.

Before the day-long protest began, celebrities spoke out in unity with McGowan and the dozens of women who have come forward with their stories of Weinstein involving sexual harassment or assault. Quite a few Twitter users noticed the company seems to have an exceptionally arbitrary and unclear policy on suspending accounts. "I said I was the proof", she claimed, later confirming to The Hollywood Reporter that the initials in her tweet belonged to Weinstein.
"Twitter is proud to empower and support the voices on our platform, especially those that speak truth to power", the rep continued.
The first New York Timesinvestigation into Weinstein reported that in 1997 McGowan, who was then 23, had reached a $100,000 settlement with the producer after "an episode in a hotel room".
