The institute saw the three make decisive contributions towards the LIGO detector, which helped prove the concept brought out by Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

Sweden's Royal Academy of Sciences announced on Tuesday that the winners are Rainer Weiss of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Barry Barish and Kip Thorne of the California Institute of Technology.

The breakthrough came with the construction of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), a collaborative project with more than 1,000 researchers from more than 20 countries.

Over 134000 fleeing home as Bali volcano may erupt at any moment
The Manaro Voui volacano in Vanuatu in the South Pacific Ocean and Mount Agung in eastern Bali could both erupt in any time. The alert status of Agung was raised to the highest level on Friday following a dramatic increase in seismic activity.

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) was designed and built specifically to observe that phenomenon, and in September 2015 the very first detection was confirmed. "It's really wonderful, but I view this more as recognition of around 1000 people who contributed and a result of dedicated efforts over 40 years", said Weiss, reacting to the announcement.

Subscribe to Times of San Diego's free daily email newsletter! . In February 2016, they announced that they had recorded gravitational waves emanating from the collision of a pair of black holes a billion light years away.

Glasgow University physicists have been working to prove the existence of gravitational waves for almost 50 years and helped develop sensors used by Ligo. These gravitational waves will assure important process for the humanity to traverse the Universe. Raymond Davis Jr., who was 88 years old when he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2002, is the oldest.

German authorities arrest suspect in $12 million food store extortion
The food - which had been laced with ethylene glycol, a chemical found in anti-freeze and brake fluid - was found and removed. According to a report by the BBC, no injuries were reported relating to the poisoned food .

Weiss, a professor emeritus at MIT, was born in Germany in 1932 and immigrated to the United States in January of 1939, escaping the Nazi regime, Haaretz reported. These "waves" would propagate outward at the speed of light, but the waves themselves were extremely faint. The beams are used to detect infinitesimal changes in the distance between mirrors at the ends of the arms that are caused when gravitational waves pass by the detectors.

There were 39 authors from the same nine Indian institutions in the publication for the detection of the second black hole merger event.
