Suu Kyi made her first speech since attacks by Rohingya Muslim insurgents on Aug 25 sparked a military response that drove over 410,000 Rohingya into neighbouring Bangladesh on Tuesday and condemned any human rights violations in Rakhine State.

"I ask the worldwide community to help us find new ways that are more constructive and daring to resolve the problems we have", Aung San Suu Kyi said, as quoted by Channel NewsAsia in her first address to nation since the August escalation of the Rohingya crisis.

Amnesty did say it was "positive" to hear Suu Kyi condemn any human rights violations in Rakhine state - where most of the Rohingya live - but it criticised her for being silent on the security forces' alleged brutalities.

The Oxford City Council has threatened it will withdraw Burma (Myanmar) leader Aung San Suu Kyi's Freedom of the City - its highest civic honour - if she does not act regarding the humanitarian crisis in Rakhine State.

"We are committed to the restoration of peace, stability and rule of law throughout the state", Suu Kyi said in front of a packed auditorium of Myanmar government officials and high ranking militarily personnel here.

Hundreds of protesters also held a rally at the Eidgah Mosque in downtown Kabul to condemn the mistreatment of Rohingya Muslims. Many carry documents from their life back in Myanmar, wrapped in layers of plastic to protect them from the rain.

"We would like you (world) to think of our country as a whole, not just as little afflicted areas".

"There has been a call for the repatriation of refugees who have fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh", she said.

"There have been allegations and counter-allegations", she said.

"We are thankful... [and] we encourage the Government to provide this and any further assistance it can to ensure that those fleeing this tragic situation have access to food, shelter and security for as long as is necessary", said Mr McMillan of the announcement. We have to make sure those allegations are based on solid evidence before we take action.

"We want to find out why this exodus is happening".

"Myanmar is a complex nation".

Many reported that their villages had been burned down and that those who stayed were killed.

The latest round of violence in Rakhine broke out on August 25, when Rohingya militants launched coordinated attacks on police posts and an army post, prompting a military crackdown. "Hate and fear are the main scourges of our world".

A note from Human Rights Watch's Myanmar researcher, posted on Twitter yesterday before Aung San Suu Kyi spoke, painted a very different picture. "If Myanmar has nothing to hide, it should allow United Nations investigators into the country, including Rakhine state", Amnesty said. "Throughout the past year, we continued with our program of development and establishment of peace", she said.

Myanmar prepared to start a refugee verification process for those who wish to return.
