Mona Lisa Perez
Perez told investigators she fired a 50 caliber handgun from about one foot away while Ruiz held the book to his chest.
Perez told police she'd agreed to go through with the video idea after Ruiz showed her a book that he'd shoot where the bullet never made it out the other side.
The incident was captured on two cameras. It was just a prank gone wrong.
Neighbors watched as paramedics did chest compressions outside of the couple's home before Ruiz died at the scene before being lifeflighted to a Fargo hospital. It shouldn't have happened at all, ' Claudia Ruiz told the West Central Tribune.
When emergency workers arrived on the scene, they attempted life-saving measures on Ruiz but he was later declared dead.
KSTP is sending a crew to Halstad and will continue to bring you updates throughout the day. She claimed he believed the book would stop a bullet, according to a criminal complaint. It was not immediately clear when or if a trial for the manslaughter charges against Perez would begin.
Perez tweeted a message Monday night, presumably shortly before they filmed the stunt, telling followers, "Me and Pedro are probably going to shoot one of the most unsafe videos ever".
She was being held in a regional jail in Crookston and is scheduled to appear in Norman County court by video Wednesday afternoon.
Claudia pleaded with Pedro not to use a real gun, insisting to him that it could cause serious harm. "I wish he would've just done another prank".
"'Because we want more viewers', he said".
Perez had uploaded several YouTube videos which featured her and Ruiz, many of which involved doing "pranks", "stunts", and "challenges".
'I told them, the bigger we get, I'll be throwing parties, ' Ruiz replies. "He had so much going for himself", said Ruiz. She pointed out two GoPro cameras that had been set up - one on the back of a vehicle and one on a ladder.
